Persiguiendo Amigos

Recientemente, Gigi y yo hicimos un viaje loco donde estuvimos persiguiendo a nuestros amigos, literalmente. Un gran amigo cumplió 50 años y lo celebró con un crucero por el Rio Rhin. Nos invitaron a ir pero era demasiado caro para nuestro presupuesto. Sin embargo, decidimos unirles en su excursion extra en Suiza. Mi amigo me envió el itinerario y traté de recrearlo. Tenemos amigos que viven en Suiza y decidimos visitarles también. Mientras planeaba el viaje, otra amiga de los Estados Unidos me dijo que ella estaría en Croacia más o menos al mismo tiempo, así que, por supuesto, teníamos que incluirla en nuestros planes.

Recently, Gigi and I took a crazy trip where we were chasing after friends, literally. A great friend turned 50 and celebrated with a cruise on the Rhine River. We were invited to go but it was too expensive for our budget. However, we decided to join them on their extra excursion in Switzerland. My friend sent me the itinerary and I tried to recreate it. We have friends who live in Switzerland and we decided to visit them, too. While I was planning the trip, another friend from the United States told me that she would be in Croatia around the same time, so, of course, we need to include her in our plans.

Follow our adventure by “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” and ship from Spain, through Switzerland and Italy, to Croatia where we reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.

Volamos de Alicante a Zúrich y luego tomamos el tren a Würenlos, un pueblo pequeño al noroeste. Tengo el mal hábito de subirme al tren equivocado la primera vez en un metro nuevo, pero corregí el error rápidamente.

We flew from Alicante to Zurich and then took the train to Würenlos, a small town to the northwest. I have a bad habit of getting on the wrong train the first time on a new subway, but I quickly corrected the error.

Nos quedamos tres días con Karin y Eddie. Gigi trabajó con Karin en Colorado. Ella es de Suiza y volvió más o menos al mismo tiempo que nos mudamos a España. Los conocí el año pasado y tuve una conexión inmediata con los dos. La amistad con Eddie es particularmente interesante y especial para mi. Aunque él es sordo y solo habla un poquito de inglés, y yo hablo alemán aún menos, no tenemos ningún problema para entendernos y bromear entre nosotros. Espero que esto sea el comienzo de una larga y estrecha amistad; otra razón para aprender alemán y, quizás, la lengua de signos.

We stayed three days with Karin and Eddie. Gigi worked with Karin in Colorado. She is from Switzerland and returned around the same time that Gigi and I moved to Spain. I met them last year and had an immediate connection with both of them. The friendship with Eddie is particularly interesting and special to me. Although he is deaf and only speaks a little English, and I speak German even less, we have no problem understanding each other and joking with each other. I hope this is the beginning of a long and close friendship; another reason to learn German and, perhaps, sign language.

Karin y Eddie son anfitriones tales maravillosas y generosos. Nos mostraron algunas ciudades cercanas, incluido Baden y Lucerna. En Baden, Suiza escuchamos a una banda de Guadalajara, México tocando música de los Estados Unidos. Experiencias como esas son un gran parte de viajar para nosotros. Hacer turismo es agradable, pero tener un gusto de la vida de los locales es mejor. Espero pasar más tiempo con ellos en Suiza, España, o cualquier lugar.

Karin and Eddie are such wonderful and generous hosts. They showed us some nearby cities, including Baden and Lucerne. In Baden, Switzerland we listen to a band from Guadalajara, Mexico playing music from the United States. Experiences like that are a big part of traveling for us. Sightseeing is nice, but having a taste of local life is better. I hope to spend more time with them in Switzerland, Spain, or anywhere.

La siguiente parte del viaje era la más interesante y loca. Quiero decir que totalmente valió la pena porque Kevin y Elizabeth son amigos muy muy queridos y no podemos visitarlos a menudo desde ellos viven en Florida y nosotros vivimos en Alicante. Diré que el itinerario que adiviné y el itinerario real estuvieron cerca pero no estuvieron exactos. Cada día estuvimos en el mismo lugar, más o menos, al mismo tiempo, más o menos, pero nunca estuvimos juntos. Solo estuvimos juntos a las tardes para tomar bebidas o cenar. Escribiré más de cada lugar en más detalle en el futuro; este solo es un resumen para tener una idea de la experiencia.

The next part of the trip was the most interesting and crazy. I want to say that it was totally worth it because Kevin and Elizabeth are very dear friends and we can't visit them often since they live in Florida and we live in Alicante. I will say that the itinerary I guessed and the actual itinerary were close but they were not exact. Every day we were in the same place, more or less, at the same time, more or less, but we were never together. We were only together in the evenings for drinks or dinner. I will write more of each place in more detail in the future; this is just a summary to get a feel for the experience.

Nuestro hotel en Interlaken

Todos llegamos a Interlaken por tren, ellos desde Basel (vía Lucerna) y nosotros desde Würenlos. Después de registrarnos en el hotel, conocimos a Tami y Rodney, sus amigos y compañeros en el crucero. Bromeo diciendo que son nuestros reemplazos. Solíamos viajar mucho con Kevin y Elizabeth, pero ahora lo hacen. Tami y Rodney son muy encantadores y fue genial conocerlos.

We all arrived at Interlaken by train, they from Basel (via Lucerne) and we from Würenlos. After checking in at the hotel, we met Tami and Rodney, their friends and companions on the cruise. I joke that they are our replacements. We used to travel with Kevin and Elizabeth a lot, but now they do. Tami and Rodney are very charming and it was great to meet them.

Paso a paso, Kevin y yo estuvimos comparando notas sobre el itinerario; lo siguiente era que íbamos a subir a Jungfrau, <<La Cima de Europa>>. Me dijo que su guía le dijo que haría calor donde iban a estar. No lo entendí, Jungfrau tiene nieve todo el año (que lo garantizan) y ví que tendríamos cinco grados. Eventualmente, nos dimos cuenta de que no habían pagado para ir a la cima, solo iban a subir a la mitad, almorzar y regresar.

Step by step, Kevin and I were comparing notes on the itinerary; next we were going to go up Jungfrau, “The Top of Europe”. He told me that his guide told him that it would be very warm where they were going to be. I didn't understand, Jungfrau has snow all year round (they guarantee it) and I saw that it would be 40 degrees. Eventually, we realized that they hadn’t paid to go to the top, they were only going to go halfway up, have lunch and come back.

El siguiente día tomamos un tren a Montreux, con una parada en Gstaad para subir a otra cima. Su viaje incluía el transporte de su equipaje hasta Montreux y un autobús chárter hasta la ubicación del teleférico a la cima de la montaña. Subimos el mismo tren, aunque en extremos opuestos, pero tuvimos que guardar nuestras maletas en la estación de tren y esperar un autobús. Cuando llegamos a la cima, ya estaban almorzando en un restaurante reservado solo para su grupo. Nos vimos brevemente antes de que tuvieran que bajar y nos echamos una foto juntos.

The next day we took a train to Montreux, with a stop in Gstaad to go up another peak. Their trip included the transport of their luggage to Montreux and a charter bus to the location of the gondola to the top of the mountain. We boarded the same train, although at opposite ends, but we needed to store our bags at the train station and wait for a bus. By the time we arrived at the summit, they were already having lunch at a restaurant reserved only for their group. We saw each other briefly before they had to go down and we took a picture together.

El evento final del itinerario fue un paseo en barco a un castillo en una isla en el Lago Lemán. Yo había comprado los billetes de ida y vuelta y las entradas del castillo por internet antes del viaje. Nuestro barco iba a embarcar a las diez, pero Kevin me dijo que iban a salir del hotel a las diez. Además, cuando pregunté sobre nuestros billetes a la taquilla, me dijeron que no podíamos desembarcar en el castillo con billetes de ida y vuelta. Bueno, podíamos, pero la vuelta no paraba en Montreux, sino en Vevey, 8 kilómetros al norte. No tenía sentido, así que cogí un horario y ví que había un barco desde el castillo hacia Montreux una hora y media después de nuestra llegada. Lo confirmé en la taquilla de a bordo. Gigi y yo anduvimos rápidamente por el castillo antes de tomar el barco correcto de regreso al hotel. A propósito, la <<isla>> está solo cuatro kilómetros al sur de nuestro hotel y solo a unos pocos metros de la costa. Gastamos 80€ por un paseo en barco que solo duró 20 minutos de ida y vuelta para visitar un castillo al que podríamos haber caminado. ¿Y nuestros amigos? Tomaron un autobús a Vevey, un barco al castillo, y otro autobús para regresar al hotel… y también tuvieron que apurarse por el castillo.

The final event of the itinerary was a boat ride to a castle on an island on Lake Geneva. I bought the round-trip tickets and the castle tickets online before the trip. Our boat was going to board at ten, but Kevin told me that they were only going to leave the hotel at ten. What’s more, when I asked about our tickets at the ticket office, they told me that we couldn’t disembark at the castle with round-trip tickets. Well, we could, but the return didn’t stop in Montreux, but in Vevey, 8 kilometers to the north. It didn't make sense, so I took a schedule and saw that there was a boat from the castle to Montreux an hour and a half after our arrival. I confirmed it at the ticket office on board. Gigi and I walked quickly through the castle before taking the correct boat back to the hotel. By the way, the “island” is only four kilometers south of our hotel and only a few meters from the coast. We spent $90 for a boat ride that only lasted 20 minutes round trip to visit a castle that we could have walked to. And our friends? They took a bus to Vevey, a boat to the castle, and another bus to return to the hotel. And they also had to rush through the castle.

Puedo entender el encanto de los cruceros y de las visitas guiadas para algunos, pero esto confirmó que no me gusta viajar con horarios ajustados y itinerarios preplanificados. El resto del viaje estuvimos menos ocupados, pero no sin desafíos y tonterías. De momento, os dejo con unas cuantas fotos más de Suiza. En el próximo post, continuaré con Italia y Croacia.

I can understand the appeal of cruises and guided tours for some, but this confirmed that I don't like to travel with tight schedules and pre-planned itineraries. The rest of the trip was less busy, but not without challenges and nonsense. For now, I leave you with a few more photos of Switzerland. In the next post, I will continue with Italy and Croatia.
