Yesterday I had a wonderful day. It was exactly the kind of day I’d always imagined life in Spain would be when I dreamed about it. In other words, a peaceful day, with no plans, without having to think too much; a day simply to live in the moment and enjoy myself. Unfortunately, Gigi and I weren’t able to consistently find that kind of life here together. I hope she’ll be able to find it for herself, as well.
I woke up and went to the market. It was an exceptional market, and I bought lots of fruits and vegetables. Right now, the mornings are cool, so I decided to drive to Altea, one of my favorite towns nearby. I took my groceries home, threw a few things in my backpack, and headed out.
In Altea, I found a parking spot and walked to the beach. There, I had a cortado and a croissant with butter and jam for breakfast. I sent a few messages to friends while looking out at the sea. Then I kept strolling along the beach until the sun started to get hotter. I thought it would be better to take a walk through the old town. Altea is perched on a hill with narrow alleys, and I figured there would be more shade there. I was right, and I was also able to pop into a few stores to escape the heat for a while. I really liked one clothing store; it had a lot of cool shirts, but none of the styles I liked were in my size.
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next. It was a little too early for lunch. I could have a drink—maybe an Aperol spritz—but then I’d have to stay in Altea much longer before I could head out. I didn’t want to spend the whole day in the heat. Instead, I put on my swimsuit and jumped into the water. I swam for a while and then sat down on the beach. The beaches in Altea are pebbly; the sound of the water as it rolls over the stones is so relaxing. I sent some more messages, including one to a dear friend with whom I’d visited Altea a few years ago. I also made plans to meet another friend for a drink later.
¿Y ahora qué? No lo sé. Pero... ¡espera!
So what now? I don't know. But... wait! I'm in the mood for some pho. I got back in the car and drove to Alicante. In Spain, meals are meant to be enjoyed with friends and family. Every time I ask for a table for one, they ask me, “Just one?” and I tell them, “Yeah, it’s sad, but I’m hungry.” Haha. As always at this restaurant, the food was delicious and full of flavor. I went back home to take a nap.
I woke up in time to welcome my friend. I had just bought a new brand of gin, and we really liked it. After having a drink with just gin and lemon, I made a martini using a recipe I came up with on the spot. We loved it!
