Dos Senderismos Cortos
La semana pasada vinieron a visitarnos nuestros amigos de Suiza. Karin y Eddie son encantadores y muy divertidos. A Gigi y a mí nos encanta pasar tiempo con ellos. Un día dedicamos un rato a explorar algunos lugares de Altea y sus alrededores. Altea es uno de mis pueblos favoritos en la provincia de Alicate. Es como se imagina un pueblo costal de España, con casas blancas que borden las colinas, tiendas de arte, y muy buen comida. Las playas son interesantes, con guijarros en vez de arena. El sonido de las ollas contra los guijarros es tan tan tranquila y relajante. Lamentable, no toque fotos de Altea esta vez.
Last week, our friends from Switzerland came to visit us. Karin and Eddie are charming and really fun. Gigi and I love spending time with them. One day we spent some time exploring Altea and the surrounding area. Altea is one of my favorite towns in the province of Alicante. It’s just what you’d imagine a Spanish coastal town to be, with white houses lining the hills, art shops, and great food. The beaches are unique, with pebbles instead of sand. The sound of the waves lapping against the pebbles is so peaceful and relaxing. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos of Altea this time.
El Barranco del Mascarat
Según Wikipedia: El Barranco del Mascarat es un desfiladero con paredes verticales de cien metros de altura que se abre en el terreno entre las localidades de Altea y Calpe, en la provincia de Alicante. Este cañón hizo imposible hasta el siglo xix un camino fácil y cómodo entre una población y la otra, obligando a los carruajes de transporte a un peligroso y difícil recorrido por el collado de Calpe.
According to Wikipedia: The Mascarat Gorge is a narrow pass with vertical walls 100 meters high that cuts through the landscape between the towns of Altea and Calpe, in the province of Alicante. Until the 19th century, this gorge made it impossible to establish an easy and convenient route between the two towns, forcing transport carriages to take a dangerous and difficult route over the Calpe Pass.
El Mascarat es el nombre de un legendario bandolero de tradición oral. Este bandolero, con la cara ennegrecida, aprovechaba el camino difícil para asaltar y robar a los viajeros. Como Robin Hood, se dice que robaba el rico y lo daba al pobre.
El Mascarat is the name of a legendary bandit from oral tradition. This bandit, with his face blackened, would take advantage of the treacherous road to ambush and rob travelers. Like Robin Hood, it is said that he stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

Les Fonts de l’Algar
Según su pagina web, Los Fuentes del Algar (Les Fonts de l’Algar en valenciano) constituyen un paraje natural con un elevado grado de conservación de la riqueza ecológica y dotado, a la vez, de servicios turísticos y de educación medioambiental. El paisaje es increíble, con cascadas espectaculares , fuentes que brotan del roca, y “tolls” (remansos de agua) en donde se pueden tomar refrescantes baños de aguas puras y cristalinas.
According to their website, The Springs of the Algar (Les Fonts de l’Algar in Valencian) is a natural area that has preserved its ecological richness to a high degree while also offering tourist services and environmental education. The landscape is incredible, with spectacular waterfalls, springs gushing from the rock, and “tolls” (pools of water) where you can take refreshing dips in pure, crystal-clear water.
Disfruté mucho esta lugar, pero nuestro tiempo allá fue un poco corto; tuvimos que salir por Altea para comer. Es cierto que vamos a regresar pronto para explorar más.
I really enjoyed this place, but our time there was a bit short; we had to head out to Altea for lunch. We’ll definitely be back soon to explore more.
